While Devang Gandhi watched Ishant Sharma charge in and bowl from the stands, little did he notice the 27-year old pacer’s kit. The kit the lanky pacer was wearing was that issued by the Board of Control for cricket in India (BCCI), something that can only be worn if playing an international Test match for India.

However, this was observed by Pranab Roy who was the match referee on the day. A report also went on to reveal that Roy was most certainly not impressed with the gesture from Ishant and sent him an informal message requesting him not to repeat the mistake. According to the latest amendments in the Indian domestic cricket rulebook, no player is permitted to don the national team kits while playing for his domestic side.

The rule also goes on to state that the players can wear only the kits supplied to them by their respective domestic teams. However, that did not matter a great deal as the Delhi side were handed a royal thrashing by their counterparts Karnataka at the vast expanse of the Eden Gardens. Moreover, Ishant Sharma did not make much of an impact in the encounter having picked just the handful of wickets.

Ishant Sharma is now on the comeback trail as he is looking to cement a place in the Indian Test team. The 27-year old Delhi-based pacer missed out on the New Zealand series after suffering from ‘chikungunya’ prior to the start of the Test series. However, in spite of this, he was not missed at all as his replacements in the form of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammad Shami impressed with some excellent bowling, to say the least.

With the team selection for the Test series against England due in a few days, this was the last opportunity for Ishant to impress the selectors. In fact, selector Devang Gandhi was present at the Eden Gardens specifically to assess the performances of Ishant and Gautam Gambhir.
