Ishant Sharma lights up Twitter after replacing Gautam Gambhir as Delhi captain
DDCA appoint the lanky pacer ahead of Unmukt Chand
In recent developments, Delhi Ranji team appointed Indian fast bowler Ishant Sharma as their captain while replacing former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir. The lanky pacer would lead the Delhi side in the upcoming Ranji season starting the first week of October.
Ishant snatched the role of captaincy from Gambhir’s deputy Unmukt Chand who has not been performing up to the mark in the previous seasons. The decision to appoint Ishant as the captain of the Delhi side was fostered due to Rishabh Pant’s India ‘A’ commitments.
“Yes, Gambhir wrote a letter addressed to DDCA administrator Vikramajit Sen, selection committee chairman Atul Wassan and Cricket Affairs Committee (CAC) chairman Madan Lal intimating them about his decision. He made it clear that time is right for someone else to take over as he wants to play purely as a player,” commented a DDCA official according to News18.
“Rishabh Pant will have his India A commitments and Unmukt Chand have had too many disastrous seasons to be even considered for a leadership role.” further added the official.
As a result, Ishant Sharma lit up social media with a variety of trolls and memes on the lanky fast bowler. Ishant Sharma has been a constant in the Test squad of the Indian team. In the 77 Test matches he has played so far, he has already clinched 218 wickets for India.
The 29-year-old hogged all the limelight earlier this year for his sledging incident against Australian captain Steve Smith recently when he mocked the idiosyncrasies of the Aussie. Ishant bowled the famous game-changing over against England in the ICC Champions Trophy of 2013, where he picked the wickets of well-set batsmen Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara. Since then, he has struggled to make the cut into the ODI side due to his high economy rate. That said, there are no two ways about his credentials in Test cricket.
