There has been complete turmoil in Afghanistan ever since the Taliban has taken over the charge. After the Taliban takeover, many even questioned whether the Afghanistan cricket team would be able to continue their journey or not or take part in the upcoming T20 WC 2021. However, it was reported later that the Taliban will support the men’s game. In the latest turn of events, they have given statements over women of the nation playing cricket which have left people shocked.
It has been reported that Taliban spokesperson stated that women’s sports and specifically women’s cricket would be banned by their organization in the nation. They stated the reason as Islam doesn’t allow women’s body parts to be exposed which will certainly happen in cricket at a point in time.
“In cricket, they might face a situation where their face and body will not be covered. Islam does not allow women to be seen like this. It is the media era, and there will be photos and videos, and then people watch it. Islam and the Islamic Emirate do not allow women to play cricket or play the kind of sports where they get exposed,” said Ahmadullah Wasiq, the deputy head of the Taliban’s cultural commission as quoted by Australia’s SBS TV.
Our vision for cricket is that it is a sport for all: CA
Wasim stated last month that they have given a nod to the men’s team to travel to Australia in November for their Test match. However, seeing the Taliban’s approach to women’s cricket, CA stated that they would not carry forward with men’s proceedings if reports about women’s cricket are true. CA made it clear in their statements that their vision supports cricket for all and they are extremely keen on the growth of women’s cricket globally.
“Driving the growth of women’s cricket globally is incredibly important to Cricket Australia. Our vision for cricket is that it is a sport for all and we support the game unequivocally for women at every level. If recent media reports that women’s cricket will not be supported in Afghanistan are substantiated, Cricket Australia would have no alternative but to not host Afghanistan for the proposed test match due to be played in Hobart,” read the statement by CA.
