When Umar Akmal made his international debut back in 2009, he was deemed as one for the future. However, his career never flourished and he has been in and out of the national team for quite a few times. Recently, the Lahore-born made his comeback into the Pakistan setup after a couple of years during the five-match ODI series against Australia in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
He got into the side on the backs of some solid performances for the Quetta Gladiators in the 2019 PSL. The right-hander scored 150 runs at an average of 30 with a top score of 48 in the first match in Sharjah. Nevertheless, despite his impressive show, Umar missed out on selection in the Pakistan World Cup squad. The snub has definitely not gone down well with elder brother Kamran Akmal.
I have been performing at the domestic level
Kamran mentioned that Umar has the potential to be a match-winner and also said that Umar along with Adnan has been constantly overlooked by the selectors. Furthermore, he reckoned that he has been doing well at the domestic circuit as well.
“Umar is a good player and has strong skills to win matches. He has his natural shots which help him play long innings. It is unjust with both Umar and Adnan that despite performances they are being overlooked,” Kamran was quoted as saying in ARY Sports.
“It not only hurts you but your family too. If you look at my stats then there are no queries as I have been performing at the domestic level,” he added.
Kamran also commented about Pakistan’s chances in the World Cup. “I think Pakistan team can make it to the top three and if they perform strongly then maybe lift the trophy,” he added.
Pakistan, captained by Sarfaraz Ahmed, are next scheduled to play the Windies in their first match on Friday, May 31 at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham.
