Bangladesh created history on Wednesday as they went on to win their first game in New Zealand across all formats. While the underdogs have risen, they have managed to beat the world champions in an emphatic fashion. However, during the course of the game, the hosts missed two opportunities.
Nevertheless, their stand-in captain Tom Latham was left to rue the two missed opportunities, and was disappointed with the performance his team showed. The batter spoke about how they couldn’t capitalize their start during the third innings. He even went on to say that the visitors put them under pressure.
“It is obviously a disappointing performance from day one, in the position we were in at lunchtime, From then on, we certainly weren’t at our best. Losing six [five] for 70 on day two didn’t allow us to get to the 400-450 mark. Bangladesh showed exactly how to operate in the first innings. They put us under pressure. We tried to build partnerships in our second innings but couldn’t push the advantage,” said Tom Latham, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Bangladesh beat New Zealand by 8 wickets
The 29-year-old then felt that they could have attacked the stumps earlier on. While addressing the swinging conditions, he mentioned the fact that his side hasn’t played a lot of cricket in Mount Maunganui. Last but not the least, he also praised the visitors for their splendid, and all-round performance.
“It’s fair to wonder whether we could have attacked the stumps a little bit more earlier on. But the ball was always swinging throughout the innings. We haven’t played a lot of cricket here. It is not a huge amount of information, whether we could have gone a little bit straighter earlier.
They obviously played the short ball really well. They showed us the lengths we needed to bowl. They got enough out of the surface to trouble us,” he said. After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, the Haque-led side dismissed the Kiwis for 328, only for them to score a massive total of 458 on the board.
Despite the Latham-led side getting to a decent start in the third innings, Ebadot Hossain triggered a collapse and picked a flurry of wickets. Thus, the Black Caps were bundled for 169, and the Bangla tigers had to chase 40 runs in the fourth innings. While it took them just 101 balls to chase it, they created history and started their year in style.
