‘It was a nightmare, still get trolled for it’ – Tamim Iqbal recalls his drop-catch of Rohit Sharma in the 2019 World Cup
Rohit got a century at the Edgbaston, taking India to a 28-run victory.
Tamim Iqbal, the Bangladesh batsman, dropped a catch against England in the 2015 World Cup. But, luckily, the Tigers won the game and made their way to the quarterfinal. In the 2019 edition of the mega event, Tamim again missed a chance, this time against India at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. However, to his dismay, his team went on to lose the match by 28 runs.
The Chittagong-born Tamim recently had a chat on Facebook Live with Rohit Sharma, whose catch he dropped last time around. The southpaw said that he still gets trolled for the missed chance. The Indian opener had scored around 10 when Tamim dropped him off Mustafizur Rahman in the fifth over.
Rohit went on to score 104 and India posted 314 on the board. While recalling the moment, Tamim presented his humorous self, saying that he made a contribution to Rohit’s century.
I was praying to god for you get out: Tamim Iqbal
“Rohit, there’s something wrong between you and Bangladesh. What you are doing with us isn’t right. In the 2015 WC, you got a hundred, in 2017 CT, you scored a ton again. In 2019, you got another century, but that credit goes to me because I dropped you.
You have no idea about how much I was trolled after that. Till now, I have to listen to the ridicules. It’s a nightmare for me,” Tamim was quoted as saying during the chat.
In the 2017 Champions Trophy in Birmingham itself, Rohit got an unbeaten 123 against Bangladesh. And in the 2015 World Cup, Rohit mustered 137 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
In his first five ODIs versus the Tigers, he had an average of 14.60. But in the last eight games against them, the Nagpur-born notched 587 runs at an average of 97.83.
“After the dropped chance, I was praying to god for you get out. I did that till you reached 40 and I knew what’s going to happen. You hit one of our spinners for two sixes and there was no looking back,” Tamim added.
In the 2019 WC, Rohit became the first batsman with five tons in a single edition of the mega event. Apart from Bangladesh, he also got hundreds against Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa and England.
