Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly has said he is surprised that one simple tweet led everyone to believe that he is stepping down as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president. On Wednesday, June 1, the southpaw had issued a thank you note on his social media handles in which he had mentioned that he is set to start something new that will be helpful to a lot of people.
People speculated that he is preparing to enter politics, and therefore, could be stepping down as the president of the national cricket board. Later in the day, Ganguly made it crystal clear that he would be continuing as the BCCI president, and the tweet was regarding his new business venture, a newly-launched global education app.
I have launched a new education app worldwide: Sourav Ganguly
“I have launched a new education app worldwide. It’s an educational app launched worldwide. “I was surprised (with the speculations). It was a simple tweet, there is no mention of resignation, nothing,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.

The speculations regarding Ganguly’s tweet blew out of proportion to such an extent that BCCI secretary Jay Shah had to come forward and clarify that the ex-India captain is not leaving the BCCI office. The reason that could have led fans to believe that Ganguly might be joining politics was a meeting with the Home Minister Amit Shah at his Kolkata residence recently.
Ganguly was appointed as the BCCI president in October 2019. During his tenure, the 49-year-old has ensured that the IPL seasons in 2020 and 2021 were conducted smoothly by successfully rescheduling them in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) amidst Covid-19 waves in India.
Apart from that, the Indian team also continued their dominance in the home bilateral series, registered a second straight Test series win on Australian soil in the 2020/21 season and also made it to the finals of the ICC World Test Championship 2019-2021 cycle.
