'It was an opportunity to bat all overs' - Rovman Powell on his match-winning knock against Bangladesh

West Indies all-rounder Rovman Powell enjoyed a good outing against Bangladesh in the second T20I at Dominica as he smashed a brilliant unbeaten 28-ball 61, thereby contributing to his team’s 35-run victory. The win helped the hosts to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series after the first game was abandoned due to rain.

Powell reckons he can not be named a hitter because he is still in the learning process, but feels that he has emerged as a proficient batter. The second T20I saw opening batter Brandon King (57) and skipper Nicholas Pooran (34) add the crucial runs to the scoreboard, but it was Powell who capitalized on the momentum and finished off the game with his power-hitting prowess.

“The platform was already set by captain and Brandon and I think they played well before I got to the crease so it was just an opportunity for me to advance the score and bat all-overs and I think I did that today. I think it’s a pretty good wicket. It’s a very good wicket, especially for batting and you just see five or so balls and get yourself in, and then the ball just coming on to the bat and you express yourself as a batsman,” said Powell.

Meanwhile, the dasher further went on to say that he has evolved as a cricketer and grown as a batter. As a result, his mindset during the game, while walking out with the bat, has changed. For any players, the mental aspect of the game is very much important as it helps them put forth their strategies to the best use. Powell is certainly of the same opinion.

“In anything you do, especially in professional sport, growth is a very important part and you have to grow from skill perspective to mental perspective and in each part I think I am growing and hopefully continue to learn. To be honest I stopped looking at myself as a big hitter. I start looking at myself as a batsman with power and with that comes control… know when to look for a single and know when to attack I think that served me well so far,” he added.
