Virat Kohli’s tenure as India’s T20I skipper came to an end after the team’s last league game in T20 WC 2021 against Namibia. Though Kohli couldn’t have got a fine end to his leadership journey in T20Is, his batting records and numbers are second to none. In the same sequence, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag felt that it would be wrong to question Kohli’s place in the T20 set-up.
It is known to all that the 33-year-old has been captaining the Indian side across formats for years now and wished to manage his workload better and hence, gave up the captaincy in one format. However, he might not play as a skipper but will definitely continue to chip in the team as a specialist batter.
“No matter how many youngsters come, there won’t be another Virat Kohli. With the kind of consistency, he displays with the bat, even in this current side, it won’t be right to question his place in the T20 set-up. He will continue to play T20I for as long as he wants,” said Sehwag on Cricbuzz.
No one will give you stability in the batting unit better than Virat Kohli: Ashish Nehra
Moving further into the discussion, former Indian pacer Ashish Nehra echoed the sentiments of Sehwag. Nehra reckoned that no batter can provide strength and stability to India at no. 3 which Kohli gives. There also has to be a combination of experience and youth in the set-up, mulled Nehra.
“No one will give you stability in the batting unit better than Virat Kohli. You can’t just load your batting unit with power-hitters, you need a combination of experience and youth,” added Ashish Nehra.
Talking about Kohli, he stands to be the highest getter in T20Is across the world with 3227 runs in his bag in just 87 innings. His average of 52.05 and strike rate of 131.91 make the story clearer for the stature or batter he is. Though Kohli remains devoid of a trophy, both in India and RCB (IPL), the way he led the men in blue would always be celebrated in high regard in the future.
