'It would embarrass modern day players' - Kevin Pietersen's hilarious reply on being asked to return to IPL

Former English captain Kevin Pietersen is currently playing for the World Giants in the inaugural edition of the Legends League Cricket. On Wednesday (January 26), while playing against Asia Lions, Pietersen showed why he was rated as one of the dangerous batters in his prime.

He scored 86 runs off 38 balls while the team was chasing a target of 150 runs against the Lions. Pietersen hit nine fours and seven sixes in his innings and helped the team chase down the target in just 13 overs. After the game, Pietersen took to Twitter and shared a video of his innings.

Indian wicketkeeper Shreevats Goswami, who shared a dressing room with Pietersen during the initial part of the IPL, asked him to return to the tournament. “Get back in to the ipl mate,” Goswami wrote to Pietersen.

Pietersen replied to his comment saying that he would be too expensive, and also would end up being the leading run-scorer in the tournament. He also hilariously stated that if he returns to the league, it would be embarrassing for the modern-day players. “I’d be too expensive and would probably end up being the top scorer in the league. It would embarrass all the modern day players!” he wrote in response.

The World Giants will be playing the final of the Legends League Cricket 2022 against Asia Lions on Saturday (January 29). The Giants won three out of four games and finished in the first position in the points table. The Lions took the second position with two wins in four games. Pietersen played for a range of franchises in the IPL after starting his career with RCB in 2009.

He was the most expensive player in that season along with English teammate Andrew Flintoff. Deccan Chargers picked him in the 2011 auction but didn’t get a game and was later picked by Delhi Daredevils in 2012. In 2015, Sunrisers Hyderabad bought Pietersen for INR two crores but he didn’t play a game due to an injury.

Pietersen was picked by Rising Pune Supergiants in 2016 but he again missed the season after sustaining an injury. Overall, he scored 1001 runs in 36 IPL matches at an average of 37.07 and a strike rate of 134.72. He hit four half-centuries and one century in his IPL career.
