In what can be called a major statement, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) co-owner N Srinivasan has hinted that MS Dhoni will continue to lead CSK in the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Although the talismanic cricketer, who retired from international cricket last year, took CSK to glory in the recently-concluded IPL 2021, he wasn’t in the best of forms with the bat.

In 16 matches, he scored just 116 runs with his average and strike rate being below 20 and 110 respectively. However, he was précised as ever with his glovework and decision-making. Hence, the hot topic of discussion is whether the 40-year-old will be retained for the 2022 season or not. It has to be noted that a mega auction is set to take place next season.

Hence, all the eight existing teams will be allowed to retain just four players ahead of the bidding event. With Dhoni being at the fag end of his cricket career and not contributing significantly with the bat, many believe CSK won’t see him as a long-term investment. However, it seems like Srinivasan views things from a different perspective.

MS Dhoni didn’t want CSK to lose money to retaining him: N Srinivasan

During a conversation with Editorji, Srinivasan revealed that Dhoni’s future with the Chennai-based franchise has been confirmed. Although he didn’t reveal whether the talismanic cricketer will lead CSK or not, he said it’s a ‘happy answer,’ indicating Dhoni would continue to serve the four-time champions.

“I know the answer but I don’t know whether I should say it or not but it’s a happy answer,” said the CSK boss on being asked about Dhoni’s future at the franchise. The former BCCI chairman also admitted that he wants Dhoni to play longer. Srinivasan also revealed that Dhoni didn’t want CSK to lose money. Hence, he didn’t give any clear answer about his future until the retention policy came out.

“MS is a very fair person. He wanted the retention policy to come out as he didn’t want CSK to lose money trying to retain him. That is the reason why he gave different replies to people. However, he made a very regnant statement. On being asked about the legacy he left behind, he said I am not gone. So, that says it all.”
