Nothing is going right for England in the ongoing second Test against India at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium. Just around a week ago at this very venue, the visitors had thoroughly outplayed India and won the first Test by 227 runs to take the lead in the series. It was India’s first defeat at home in Tests since 2017.

However, the tables have turned in the ongoing game. While India have bounced back in style after the thrashing in the first Test, England have failed to build on their famous triumph. At present, the hosts are firmly in command of the proceedings after taking a huge 195-run lead in the first innings and then extending their overall lead to more than 300 on Monday (February 15).

In the first innings, India piled up 329 thanks to a big century from Rohit Sharma (161) before bowling out the visitors for a paltry 134. Ravichandran Ashwin was the destructor-in-chief, taking 5 for 43 while Ishant Sharma and Axar Patel picked up two wickets apiece as India bowled out England with the utmost ease.

In the second innings, India were off to a poor start and found themselves reeling at 106 for 6. But before England could make further inroads, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin steadied the ship. The two took the score past the 150-run mark and ensured that India do not lose any more wicket before lunch. And perhaps the desperation to break the stand was the reason behind England skipper Joe Root’s bizarre decision to review against Ashwin.

England trolled for poor DRS call

The incident happened in the 48th over which was the last over before lunch when Ashwin was facing part-time spinner Dan Lawrence. It was a full-length delivery that turned sharply and beat Ashwin before going down the leg side. The ball was nowhere close to the ball although Ashwin had tried to flick it.

As far as wicketkeeper Ben Foakes is concerned, he continued his fine performance in the game and caught the ball in a stunning manner with one hand. In the meantime, the England fielders appealed for a caught behind but on-field umpire Nitin Menon gave his decision in the favour of the batsman. Root & Co., however, were convinced that Ashwin had edged the ball and decided to review the decision.

But the replays soon made things clear and left the English camp red-faced. Unsurprisingly, England also became the butt of all jokes on Twitter for their bizarre call. Former spinner Shane Warne led the trolling as the cricket fraternity had some fun at England’s expense.
