‘It’s definitely realistic’ – Glenn Maxwell confident of making Test comeback

At the age of 33, Glenn Maxwell hasn’t given up hopes of playing Test cricket for Australia again. The veteran made his debut in the longer format back in 2013, but has played only seven matches. Although he has a ton to his name, the right-handed batter has only averaged 26.07.

Maxwell hasn’t got a chance to don the whites since Australia’s tour of Bangladesh back in 2017. The batter had a tough time on the tour after which he hasn’t found his way back into the Aussie Test setup.

However, having made technical changes to his batting, Maxwell sounded confident of staking his claim back into the Test side.

“It’s definitely realistic. I think I am probably playing as well as ever have at the moment. I feel really good about my game. I have been able to work on different techniques for different formats, which has really helped going forward.

“I have been in constant contact with selectors and they have been really clear about if opportunities do pop up then I am ready for red ball,” Maxwell was quoted as saying on cricket 365.

The Aussies have a chock-a-block schedule next year. The Aussies are set to visit Pakistan in March-April followed by their tour of Sri Lanka in June-July. Thereafter, Australia are scheduled to play a one-off Test against Afghanistan after which they will lock horns with India in four Tests.

“There is a lot of cricket next year, you don’t want to burn guys out through the season so there could be a host of changes. So, I have to make sure I am playing well when they pick those squads in any format,” he added.

Maxwell has played all his Test matches in the sub-continent and has impressive numbers in first-class cricket as well. Back in March 2017, Maxwell scored a magnificent ton against India in Ranchi. But apart from that, he hasn’t got a 50 plus score in Test cricket.

Maxwell isn’t a part of the Aussie squad for the upcoming Ashes, starting December 8 at The Gabba in Brisbane. Nevertheless, he remains one of the greatest assets for Australia in limited-overs cricket.
