‘It’s not going to get any easier’ – Nasser Hussain feels Virat Kohli is misreading James Anderson and Ollie Robinson
Kohli has averaged in the 20s in the ongoing Test series against England.
Former England cricketer Nasser Hussain said that Indian captain Virat Kohli has had his difficulties while playing against the new ball. Although the visitors won the second Test at Lord’s by 151 runs, Virat hasn’t had the best of outings from the personal front. In five innings, the 32-year-old Kohli has managed 124 runs at an average of 24.80 with the highest score of 55.
James Anderson, Ollie Robinson and Sam Curran have gotten him in trouble on quite a few instances. Hussain said that Kohli played efficiently against the old ball. However, the veteran said that Kohli found it tough to deal with the late swing generated by the new cherry.
Nasser Hussain shares his opinions
“He [Kohli] did go through a spell on the third day, admittedly against an older ball, where he was leaving it well. But it’s harder to leave the new ball because it swings later, and he was out again on Saturday in a familiar manner,” Hussain wrote in his column for Daily Mail.
“Kohli has played at balls he could be leaving; he seems to have that slight technical issue I highlighted in these pages with the positioning of his back foot and he is not picking up the line of Anderson and Robinson,” Hussain stated.
Hussain said that Virat has been caught in two minds plenty of times due to which he hasn’t tasted much success on the England tour thus far.
“He is not sure whether to play or leave and whether to set himself for the inswinger or not. He doesn’t know what to do. It’s high-class bowling and it’s not going to get any easier for him,” Hussain added.
Albeit he averages above 50 in all three formats, Virat hasn’t scored a century for more than two years now. Kohli, along with Cheteshwar Pujara and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, has come under fire for their indifferent run of form with the bat in hand.
After winning the Lord’s Test, India lost the third Test in Leeds by an innings and 76 runs. The fourth Test is scheduled to start on September 2 at the Kennington Oval in London.
