I've done my best, It's time for the next lot to take over: Virat Kohli
Taking over as India’s all-format captain in 2017, Kohli has played tireless cricket and performed pretty consistently.
India’s clash against Namibia marks Virat Kohli’s last game as India’s T20I captain. The talismanic batter had announced that he would step down from the leadership role in this format after the T20 World Cup 2021. As the Men in Blue won’t qualify for the semi-finals, Virat Kohli won’t end his T20I captaincy career on an emphatic note. However, nothing can deny the fact that the 33-year-old has been a brilliant leader.
Taking over as India’s all-format captain in 2017, Kohli has played tireless cricket and performed consistently. Although questions have been raised over his decision-making and leadership skill, Kohli has guided India to numerous wins in the shortest international format. Under his captaincy, in fact, the Men in Blue won five successive T20I wins.
It’s been an honour to captain India: Virat Kohli
Kohli also seemed pretty pleased with his stint as he talked about his captaincy career during the toss session. Mentioning that leading the Indian team has been a honour for him, Kohli said Indian cricket is in safe hands.
“It’s been an honour to captain India and I’ve done my best. The shortest format has to give way for the longer formats. I’ve been grateful for the opportunity. It’s time for the next lot to take the team forward. Rohit has been looking on anyway, and Indian cricket is in good hands,” said Kohli during the toss.
Meanwhile, the coin landed in India’s favour and Virat Kohli unsurprisingly opted to field in the Dubai Stadium. For the unversed, this game is a dead rubber as India aren’t any more in the semi-final race. Contrary to the expectations, the inaugural-edition champions suffered humiliating defeats against Pakistan and New Zealand respectively in their first couple of fixtures.
While they did defeat Afghanistan and Scotland emphatically in their next two games, it won’t earn them a place in the final four. Nevertheless, Kohli would be determined to end his T20I captaincy stint with a win. With Namibia being an associate team, the Men in Blue are firm favourites. Hence, they are expected to walk away with another comprehensive win. Kohli would also like to make his bat talk.
