I've never been more proud of a team than this one: Virat Kohli

India couldn’t win the series on the field in Sydney due to the rain. But they had done enough before to seal it by 2-1 and the elation in the Indian camp was visible. The moment the final Test match was called off there were smiles all around and the captain Virat Kohli was delighted. After promising so much throughout 2018, his team is finally returning with a trophy from a country which most of the teams even dread to dream.

Kohli, in the post-match presentation ceremony, was all praise about his team and rather felt honoured to lead this bunch of talented players. He was immensely proud of his players and it was visible on his face. India had retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy but more than that it was the happiness of a Test series win in Australia. Kohli recalled how he was crowned the captain in the same country after MS Dhoni decided to hang his boots after the Boxing Day Test in 2014.

“Firstly I want to say, I’ve never been more proud of a team than this one. The culture we’ve been able to build over the last 12 months. Our transition started here when I became the captain for the first time. Only one word to say, I’m proud. To lead these players is an honour and a privilege. They make the captain look good. Definitely, deserve to enjoy this moment. By far this is my best achievement,” the 30-year-old said.

Special mention to Pujara and Agarwal

The major reason India won the series was Cheteshwar Pujara who piled on 521 runs in the seven outings with as many as three centuries. He broke down the Australian bowlers with his resilience and patience while Mayank Agarwal was also the find of the tour. He made his debut in the Boxing Day Test and went on to score a couple of crucial half-centuries in the first innings to lay the platform.

“Want to give a special mention to Pujara. Especially after the kind of series he had the last time he came here. He’s one guy always willing to accept things. Takes it in his stride and works on his game. He’s the nicest man around. Special mention to Mayank Agarwal too. To come in on Boxing Day and play like that against a high-quality attack in their conditions speaks volumes of the belief he has,” Kohli added.

Wishes the best to Australia

Virat Kohli also realised the fact that this Australian team is in transition and they will always put up a fight regardless of the situation. He also wished Tim Paine all the luck going forward. ” Australia are always going to be a very competitive side. Every team goes through the transition. I wish Tim and the management all the very best. I’m sure they’re going to regroup and come back to the dominating force they are,” the Indian skipper further said.
