Jack Edwards becomes the youngest centurion of the JLT One-Day Cup
In the final group stage game, Edwards was awarded the player of the match for his brilliant century in a tricky chase.
Jack Edwards, who represented the Australian team during this year’s U19 World Cup is continuing his good work with the New South Wales in the ongoing JLT One-Day Cup. The 18-year-old scored 32 and 42 batting low down the order in his first two matches before gaining a promotion as an opener. He made only 15 runs in his first outing at the top but followed it with 50-ball 68 against Tasmania. In the final group stage game, Edwards was awarded the player of the match for his brilliant century in a tricky chase.
The young all-rounder scored 116 in 112 balls with 12 fours and three sixes in the 297-run chase against Queensland at the Drummoyne Oval in Sydney. He shared a 237-run stand with Moises Henriques as NSW chased down the target in 45.4 overs for the loss of four wickets. Henriques remained unbeaten on a run-a-ball 134. Both the players brought up their centuries in the 37th over with singles off successive deliveries.
At the age of 18 years and 165 days, Jack Edwards became the youngest player to score a century in Australia’s One-Day competition. He thus broke the record held by Charles Davies of South Australia. Davies was 19 years and 337 days old when he scored 125 against Western Australia in 1998. No player other than Edwards and Davies has scored a century in the Australian Domestic One-Dayers before turning 20.
A record partnership to win
Earlier in the day, Queensland elected to bat first after winning the toss. Chris Lynn’s second century in the space of three matches kept the visiting side up and running. Lynn scored 135 off just 114 deliveries with 14 fours and seven sixes. He was dismissed on 278/5 in the 43rd over but his team was bowled out for 296 losing the last four wickets for four runs. In the 297-run chase, New South Wales were reduced to 17/2 in the 3rd over before Henriques joined Edwards at the crease.
The pair added 237 runs for the 3rd wicket which is the NSW’s second highest in this competition for the 3rd wicket. The Waugh twins; Steve Waugh and Mark Waugh added 240 for the 3rd wicket in the 1991 game against Victoria. Overall, the 237-run stand between Henriques and Edwards is New South Wales’ 3rd biggest for any wicket in Domestic One-Day Cup. The highest was recorded by RB McCosker and J Dyson who put on a 253-run opening stand against South Australia in 1981.
