James Anderson and Alastair Cook face-off in the yo-yo test

One is 35, the highest wicket-taker for England in Test cricket and the other is 33, the highest run-getter among active Test cricketers. Age or their seniority doesn’t mean they don’t match up with the young and vibrant players in the English team as they are getting ready to battle India in a five-match Test series. The duo geared up for a face-off on the track – as a part of the pre-series training the English team took the yo-yo test and it was James Anderson vs Alastair Cook.

England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) shared a snippet from the session and it appears to be that of the last lap. Cook and Anderson are set on the mark and the yo-yo test beep goes off Cook was already panting and sets off, he’s extremely drained by now but still completes and gets back just in time before another beep. But that was too much for him. He goes down on all fours soon after. ECB mentioned in the post that the yo-yo test is quite brutal!

Cook exhausted all his energy and was the last player to go down in the yo-yo test. As per ECB’s video posted on the website he completed 3080 meters before finally bowing out. He holds the record for the highest score in the team and if Jonny Bairstow is to be believed Cookie is an absolute machine when it comes to the yo-yo test.

“The yo-yo test is obviously pretty brutal. It is something that over a period of time, many many years that we’ve had to endure. It is not enjoyable at all, no one looks forward to doing it Cookie obviously won it for the last however many years. He is a machine, he just keeps going. I’ll have him on the sprint test but when it comes to yo-yo he just doesn’t stop,” Bairstow said in a video published by the ECB.
