The match Barbados Tridents and St Lucia Stars at Kensington Oval in Barbados turned out to be a one-sided affair as the visiting team won by six wickets with 15 deliveries to spare. However, amidst the exciting cricket, the encounter was also a witness to a controversy when Jason Holder, the Tridents’ captain dismissed the opposition skipper Kieron Pollard.
After being put into bat, the hosts could only manage 135 runs for the loss of seven wickets. Earlier, they lost four home matches and yesterday, it wasn’t any different. Moreover, after St Kitts and Nevis Patriots’ win over the Jamaica Tallawahs, the Tridents were officially eliminated from this season’s Caribbean Premier League as now they can reach the fifth spot of the table at best.
Coming back to controversy, it occurred during the run chase of the Stars. The pitch offered assistance for the spinners, but the likes of Rakheem Cornwall and Chandrapaul Hemraj took Imran Khan and Ashley Nurse, two of the Tridents’ spinners, to the cleaners. Subsequently, the required rate was reduced to less than a run-a-ball in the last ten overs.
Holder pins Pollard in front, but…
Holder bowled the 11th over and cleaned up Hemraj with a back-of-a-length delivery. In the very next ball, the speedster dished out a vicious Yorker, which struck Pollard on the pads as the batsmen tried to advance down the track. Holder appealed and the on-field umpire adjudged the batsman out. Pollard was a tad bewildered as he quite a distance down the track.
The decision went upstairs and replays showed that Holder’s foot landed beyond the bowling crease, which suggested that it was a no-ball. Even the commentators were sure about the same. However, to everyone’s surprise, the third umpire didn’t find any fault in the delivery and the decision stood, albeit it didn’t make much of an impact as far as the final result of the match was concerned.
