For Jason Holder, an opportunity to smile came almost after a month after his side started their tour of India. On October 27, Windies defeated a strong Indian side in the third ODI of the ongoing five-match series by 43 runs in Pune to make it 1-1. The Windies skipper will still rue the lost opportunity of going a match up as the second ODI in Vizag ended in a tie but nonetheless, he will be happy that the visitors still have a chance to win a series in India, something they haven’t done since 2002.

On Sunday, Holder was asked by somebody on Insta AMA (a new feature) to name his favourite Indian cricketer and the Caribbean all-rounder revealed that it is former Indian middle-order batsman VVS Laxman. It can be mentioned here that Laxman is the mentor of Sunrisers Hyderabad, the same franchise that Holder played for during one of the Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons.

Laxman was one of the members of India’s famous gang of five batsmen who played for India between 1996 and 2012, scoring over 11,000 international runs with 23 centuries. His most emphatic statement in international cricket came in 2001 after hitting 281 against Australia in a historic Test in Kolkata which India won despite facing follow-on.

However, in April, 27-year-old Holder came up with his best-ever cricketing XI and it featured former Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, and not Laxman, as the lone Indian cricketer.

Holder has a poor record as captain

Jason Holder himself has played 35 Tests, 83 ODIs and eight T20Is, scoring almost 3,000 runs and taking over 200 wickets. The Barbados all-rounder, however, has an ordinary record as the captain of the Caribbean side, winning only 18 out of 62 ODIs he led since 2015 and seven out of 27 Tests. The Windies lost the Test series 0-2 prior to the ODIs though Holder led only in the second game as he missed the first owing to injury.

The Windies face Virat Kohli’s India for the fourth ODI at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Monday and a win here will ensure that the visitors will not lose the series.
