Despite the sluggish form with the bat, Eoin Morgan and the think tank of England are most likely to persist with Jason Roy at the opening slot against their arch rivals Australia. English assistant coach remained confident about the fact that there will be no change in personnel in the batting order, despite Roy’s dry spell with the bat. He terms Roy’s approach as emblematic of the Morgan era.
Eoin Morgan, along with Director of ECB Andrew Strauss, was responsible for creating a turnaround in fortunes of English Cricket in coloured clothing post their exit from the ICC World Cup of 2015 in Australia. The journey which started in England’s series against New Zealand is reaping rewards presently as they are the prime contenders for the ICC Champions Trophy.Morgan has planted fearless approach in England Cricket and Jason Roy has been a key player for the Englishmen in the new look limited overs squad.
Much has been talked about the rusty form of Roy in the English summer. In the seven innings, he has only managed to score 47 runs. Many Pundits questioned his place in the side with Jonny Bairstow, who is rich in form this season and warming the bench.
Jason Roy- Integral for English success
England’s assistant coach revealed that the team isn’t pondering along the lines of dropping the quintessential batsman. “The selflessness … Jason Roy epitomised it in that first series here against New Zealand, he played in the way we want people to play. That’s continued. The case for dropping him now will, therefore, be resisted.” quoted Paul Farbrace. He later confirmed that it is unlikely that Roy would miss out against Australia tomorrow.
“Unlikely. One of the things we’ve been very consistent on is selection. We’ve stuck by people when they haven’t been taking wickets or scoring runs, and it’s always paid dividends. He would be disappointed when he got out [for 13 at Cardiff on Tuesday] – but with the rest of the batters playing well, sometimes you can keep going with someone when they’re finding it a bit tough” said the assistant coach according to Independent.
Farbrace emphasised on the fact that Roy has not been getting out on similar deliveries or similar mode of dismissal. “If he was drastically out of form and playing and missing at every ball, then you’d be concerned for a batsman. He’s not getting out to shots he hasn’t played [before], but when you’re not playing well they do look like tough dismissals.” commented the 49-year old.
“There was no one in our dressing room saying ‘What are you doing that for?’, because he’s done it in the past and been successful. You just have to keep backing them.” concluded the former wicket-keeper. England has already qualified for the semi-finals for the Champions Trophy with their wins against New Zealand and Bangladesh. They would be taking on Australians tomorrow with their rivals yet to play a full match.
