Jasprit Bumrah not paying heed to comments about his bowling action
Bumrah has made close to 80 international appearances for India by far and will have a crucial role to play in Australia.
India pacer Jasprit Bumrah said he does not pay heed to comments and opinions on his bowling action as he is comfortable with what he is currently doing. There have been several former cricketers and experts, such as Aqib Javed, who have felt and repeatedly said that his unusual bowling action makes him prone to injuries, which could curtail his longevity in the sport.
Bumrah took the cricketing world by storm when he broke into the Mumbai Indians squad in 2013, and his side went to clinch their maiden title. He has since been an integral part of Mumbai becoming one of the tournament’s most successful sides and played a pivotal role in all three of Mumbai’s victorious IPL campaigns.
Under the tutelage of Sri Lankan great Lasith Malinga, Bumrah has developed into India’s most potent death overs bowler. His hallmark is his toe-crushing yorkers, something he picked up from Malinga during his stint with the Mumbai Indians.
The paceman has also experienced considerable success since making his debut in Test cricket. Although hailed as a T20 specialist, Bumrah’s inclusion in India’s pace department has significantly bolstered its strength and variety. His unusual action and the pace he can generate despite his short run-up make him a bowler hard to read. However, there have been numerous comments flying at him about his action.
I try to focus on my body
Speaking at a promotional event, Bumrah said, “I don’t focus on what the experts are saying or not. I focus on what has helped me and I try to focus on my body and what do I need to keep myself fit. There is not a perfect action in cricket, tell me a bowler, like that, who has not got injured. I focus on how to improve my fitness level.”
The 24-year-old also mentioned that it would not be wise to comment on the upcoming Australia tour without having a look at the conditions. India are set to travel Down Under for a four Test match series, with the first Test beginning at Adelaide on December 6. Based on his performance in England earlier this year, Bumrah is very likely to find himself flying to Australia in November for the lengthy series.
“There is always bounce there but Australia now a days is known for high-scoring games well. I am not focusing too much ahead, I am focusing on whatever the next match I play. That’s always been my philosophy. When I reach Australia, I will assess the wickets. Because sometimes going there with pre-conceived notions and then it doesn’t happen, so you are in no space. I’ll go there, see the conditions and plan according to that,” he said.
The pacer was rested for the two-match Test series against the Windies, and will also not be a part of the first two ODIs against the same opposition.
