The Bengal side, after making their way into the finals of the Ranji Trophy 2019-2020, seemed confident enough to take on Saurashtra. Leading Saurashtra, Jaydev Unadkat did produce a magical moment in the game by sending Bengal’s Akash Deep to the pavilion for a duck.

This incident took place during the first innings of Bengal. Trailing by 425 runs, the Bengal side was set up to give a good fightback. It was 153rd over in the game when Akash Deep failed to make contact with the ball and remained on his crease with no part of his foot inside. While two attempts were made to run him out, one was successful and the right-hander was declared out eventually.

Bengal had just lost the wicket of well-set Anustup Majumdar who scored 63 of 151 balls. After picking up his first wicket of the final, Jayadev Unadkat, the Saurashtra captain, showcased presence of mind to show the exit door to Akash Deep.

Bengal amass 381 in their first innings of Ranji Trophy final

It was a sign of poor match awareness as any batsman is expected to be wary of his presence inside the crease. What made this bizarre was that two attempts were made to dismiss Akash Deep. First, the wicketkeeper Avi Barot tried his luck at the stumps but missed. This should have been a wake-up call for Akash Deep but he stood at that same position almost waiting for someone to have another go.

Receiving the ball from wicketkeeper Barot, Jaydev hit the stumps in no time. This came as a shock to the batsman and the mistake of Akash Deep left Bengal in a spot of bother. Trailing such a first innings score can definitely drain any side mentally and physically. Amidst all of that, an incident like this can dent the spirit of the team.

The Bengal side was all out soon after the incident for 381, giving the Saurashtra a 37-run lead. The fight for the silverware proceeds as both teams approach the fifth and final day of the match.
