The history was created on Saturday even before India Men’s team had won the T20I series against South Africa. The Girls in Blue had made the country proud by defeating South Africa Women in both the ODI and T20 International series for the first time ever. The fifth and final game was a one-sided affair with the visitors winning the encounter by 54 runs. However, the 17-year-old Jemimah Rodrigues was trending more than anything as she grabbed a stunning catch at the boundary to send back Marizanne Kapp.
The skipper of the home side Dane Van Niekerk opted to bowl first after which the Indian team got off to a bad start with Smriti Mandhana losing her wicket early. The veteran Mithali Raj and the young Jemimah added 98 runs for the second wicket and helped India post 166 runs for the loss of four wickets after 20 overs. While the former notched up yet another half-century scoring 62, Jemimah smashed 44 off just 34 deliveries.
Flying Jemimah
South Africa, in response, stuttered right from the word go and lost wickets in clumps. But Marizanne Kapp was fighting hard for them from one end. She is known for her big hitting and had already sent the ball out of the ground twice. She again swung hard at the length delivery of Rumeli Dhar in the 17th over which was certain to go for the maximum. Even the commentators had declared the ball was going for six, but Jemimah Rodrigues had other ideas. She believed in herself to stop the ball from going for six and jumped only to grab it.
She balanced herself perfectly and clung on to an unbelievable catch which left Kapp distraught. Jemimah timed her jump perfectly and earned praises from all the corners of the cricketing world. Soon after the dismissal, the hosts were bundled out in the next over as India Women scripted the history by winning the T20I series by 3-1.
