The inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has divided the fans across the country. Earlier, the fans used to follow team India and celebrate their success together. With the likes of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma among other top cricketers playing for different franchises, the fans are also divided now. Social media wars have been going on for a long time between the player fanbases every now and then.
But an incident in Kurundwad in Kolhapur district between Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni fans turned physical on Saturday. Big hoardings praising the latter were placed on the side of the road after he retired from international cricket. Rohit won the Khel Ratna award on Friday and even fans placed the hoardings congratulating the cricketer.
However, his hoardings were damaged by someone and this led to the two fanbases in the city coming face to face. Eventually, one of the fans was taken to the sugarcane field by the other group and beaten. As soon as this news came out, former India cricketer Virender Sehwag was disappointed.
Remember Team India as one unit, says Virender Sehwag
He urged the fans to not get divided based on the players as the cricketers themselves are extremely fond of each other. The likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni are very good friends on and off the field and they have played together for a lot of years now. Moreover, there is no rift between them at all like the fan bases have.
Sehwag also cited the same stating the fans are mad at different level. He also suggested them to remember team India as one unit and not based on any individual player. “Kya karte rehte ho paagalon. Aapas mein players are either fond of each other or just don’t talk much, kaam se kaam rakhte hain. But kuchh fans alag hi level ke pagle hain. Jhagda Jhagdi mat karo, Team India ko- as one yaad karo,” his tweet read.
Sehwag’s above tweet roughly translates to – ‘What are you doing guys? Players, among themselves, are either fond of each other or they don’t talk much and do their job. But few fans are mad at different level. Don’t fight and remember team India as one unit.’
Here’s his tweet:
