Joe Root completes 10000 runs in International cricket
Root became the 77th player and the 8th from England to reach the milestone in International cricket.
Joe Root, one of the modern-day greats achieved yet another milestone in his career as the England batsman went past 10000 runs in International cricket during the 3rd ODI against Windies at Bristol. Thus, Root became the 77th player and the 8th from England to reach the milestone in International cricket. Since Root’s debut in December 2012, Virat Kohli is the only other player to have scored over 10000 runs in International cricket.
Till the 2nd ODI against Australia, Kohli aggregated 10,030 runs across formats in this period. Root made his International debut in a Test match against India at Nagpur. By going past the 10000-run milestone in 222 innings, Root became the 4th quickest to achieve the feat. He also became the quickest among the England players surpassing Alastair Cook’s record as the left-hander took 230 innings. Vivian Richards was the quickest to reach 10000 International runs as he got there in 206 innings; 11 fewer than Hashim Amla, the 2nd quickest.
Root has a total of 10006 runs in International cricket with the help of 5323 Test runs in 110 innings, 3940 runs in ODIs from 89 innings and 743 T20I runs in 23 innings. Root achieved the milestone during his 84-run knock against Windies when he reached an individual score of 78. While batting on 72, Root slog-swept Ashley Nurse over deep mid-wicket to bring up 10k runs in his career.
Among Virat Kohli, Steven Smith, Joe Root and Kane Williamson, the fabulous four of this generation, Root is the quickest to complete 10000 runs across formats. Indian captain Virat Kohli needed 232 innings while New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson took 239 innings to complete 10000 International runs. The Australian captain Steven Smith is yet to complete 10000 runs across formats, in fact, he has completed 9000 International runs during the 2nd ODI against India in his 215th innings.
