Joe Root is glad ‘Mankading’ didn’t happen to England in a World Cup final or crunch WC game

The ‘Mankading’ episode in the match between Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Jaipur in the Indian Premier League 2019 last Monday caused quite a big stir in the cricketing world. Kings’ captain Ravichandran Ashwin’s act of dismissing an in-form Jos Buttler after he went out of the crease at the non-striker’s end left the game’s fraternity divided. While many felt Ashwin’s deed had nothing wrong in it as the law permits such dismissals, others went after him brutally saying it was a violation of the gentleman’s spirit.

RR brand ambassador Shane Warne was harsh in his take on Ashwin’s action, and even questioned the off-spinner’s integrity and class. In fact, when Ashwin erred with the fielding placement in the second game the KXIP played in IPL 12, against Kolkata Knight Riders, and it proved costly at the end, his critics taunted him again saying it was nothing but karma. Ashwin himself though was unapologetic about the ‘Mankading’ episode, saying he was well within the limits of law while effecting the dismissal.

Now, another England cricketer has come up with his take on the incident and he is the Three Lions’ captain in Tests: Joe Root. The right-handed batsman with over 12,000 international runs and 30 tons said he would not like to see himself involved in such an incident and that he “wasn’t too impressed personally”, but also conceded that it’s something within the laws of the game and Butter had to be at the receiving end.

“It’s not something that I would like to be involved in. I wasn’t too impressed personally. But it’s within the laws of the game as a lot of people have said. Jos had to take it on the chin, unfortunately,” the 28-year-old was quoted as saying by The Telegraph, UK.

“You know that some people might be looking to do that now. Umpires being really clear on what is out and what is not out is going to be crucial, and making sure that everyone is on the same page with it so there are no inconsistencies is going to be really important and having the clarity there for everyone playing the game. I know it’s not a straightforward rule but as much as possible there is a way of working out what is out and what’s not.”

Mankading is a warning to batsmen now, feels Root

Root also said that the ‘Mankading’ incident is a warning for other batsmen and added that he was happy that such a controversial incident didn’t happen to England during a World Cup final or a crucial game in the mega event. He also said that the Indian off-spinner made the move in the heat of the game.

The incident happened when RR were well placed at 108 for 1 in the pursuit of 185 but it left a telling impact on the team as it lost the plot from thereon to lose the match by 14 runs.
