Heading into the second One-Day International against India, the English team was under quite some pressure. They lost the first match at Trent Bridge and that game proved India can boss over England in these conditions. One of their major concerns was the team’s batting that hadn’t clicked once against India yet. There was a lot of pressure on Joe Root who was considered their most stable batsman against spin but he found Kuldeep Yadav too hot to handle.

In the Lord’s ODI, he looked a lot more confident, he sprint his way to the middle when Jonny Bairstow was dismissed by Kuldeep and took guard against the bowler who had dismissed him twice in three balls. From the very first ball he faced, he looked his confident self, there was no signs of tentativeness. He used his feet well, the fuller balls were dispatched to the boundary and he played the ball on the merit and not on the perception the bowler has created.

Laxman impressed with the intent

Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman was impressed with Root’s display and he feels that it was quite a sensational knock. All the experts were talking about the England Test skipper and if he should be dropped from the team. However, Root replied to all of them with his 12th ODI hundred.

“Sensational knock, we spoke so much about him (Joe Root) before the start of this game, but again form is temporary and class is permanent. What really impressed me was the intent he showed right from the first ball he played against the spinners using his feet the meeting points were much better than what we saw right through the T20 series and the first ODI,” Laxman said while speaking on ESPNcricinfo.

Root stood there till the very end and was run out on the last ball having contributed 112 runs to the team’s total of 322. England though haven’t managed a huge total will feel much confident defending it against the famed Indian batters.
