After setting the County Championship on fire last season, Jofra Archer might now get fast-tracked into England team next year ahead of the World Cup. According to the revised regulations by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), any player who has lived in the country at least for three years and not played as the local player elsewhere, becomes eligible to play for England straightaway.

Archer came into the limelight last year during the County season and the T20 Blast where he brought his amazing capabilities to the fore. He also got a big IPL contract of Rs 7.20 Crore from the Rajasthan Royals who picked him in the mega auction held in January this year. The Caribbean player also lived up to the expectations picking 15 wickets in 10 outings and more often than not bowled the crunch overs for his side.

Updated regulations

According to the Guardian Sport, the ECB decided to bring the regulations closer to ICC who made the amendments to the rules earlier this year. The new eligibility criteria for players, both men and women, from January 1, 2019 are: British Citizenship and either born in England/Wales or 3 years of residence and not played as a local player in professional international or domestic cricket in a full member country within the last three years.

Archer fulfills the last couple of regulations and straightaway becomes eligible to play for England from January next year. He left the Caribbean nation with disappointment after being left out of the U19 World Cup squad in 2014 and has been playing Club cricket in England since 2015. According to the earlier rules, he would’ve become eligible to don England jersey during 2022-2023 season.

But now with the latest regulations, Archer might be included in the England squad for the mega event which is set to take place in their home country. There have been calls of fast-tracking him in the national squad despite the ODI captain Eoin Morgan stressing that he won’t be making it to the team easily with the team for World Cup almost settled.
