Jon-Jon Smuts replaces Aiden Markram in South Africa A squad for the Tri-series

The tri-series between South Africa A, India A and Australia A always seemed in doubt, with the ongoing dispute between the Australian cricketers and their board. Just when it looked like the remaining two teams would pull out of the tournament, Afghanistan A were roped in to replace the Aussies.

CSA’s Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat confirmed that Afghanistan A side would replace the Australian team in a statement. “We are delighted that Afghanistan have accepted our invitation and look forward to welcoming them to our country for the very first time,” Lorgat said. “Afghanistan were deservedly granted Full Member status at the ICC annual conference last month after showing impressive growth in recent years.

South Africa A’s squad for the tri-series

South Africa had announced their squad earlier in the month, with Aiden Markram selected in the limited-overs squad for the A side. However, due to Markram’s involvement in the on-going series against England, he will not be able to represent the A side in the Tri-series. Jon-Jon Smuts will replace the right-hander in the squad for the A team. The SA A side for the 2 four-day matches against India A will be named later.

Alongside the Warriors’ player Jon-Jon Smuts, there will be the South African limited-overs player Farhaan Behardien who will be crucial to the setup of the team. Titans’ Henry Davids would open the side alongside Smuts, with Dane Paterson leading the side with the ball. Lion’s spinner Aaron Phangiso will also feature in the squad, alongside Tabraiz Shamsi and all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius.

The triangular series is set to begin on the 26th of July, followed by the final of the series that will happen on the 8th of August. Hosts South Africa would enter this tri series as the front-runners with India giving close competition to them as the visiting side.
