Ahead of the U-19 World Cup, former English batsman, Jonathan Trott has been named as the batting coach of the England U-19 team. The World Cup will begin in New Zealand from next month, as former England seamer Jon Lewis takes over as England’s head coach.
Lewis prior to the appointment was the assistant coach at county side Sussex and is currently working closely with the England Lions team in Australia.
ECB’s performance director David Parsons talked about the appointment of the duo, ahead of the World Cup.
“We are delighted that Jon Lewis and Jonathan Trott have accepted our invitations to join the England Under-19s at the World Cup, and grateful to their counties Sussex and Warwickshire for releasing them to do so,” said Parsons.
Jonathan Trott’s experience will help the U-19 side:
Further, he added that Jon’s experience with the U-19 side and the Lions side has made him the front-runner for the job.
As per the quotes in CricInfo, “Trotty was invited to help the Lions in their preparations for Australia by Andy Flower, and made a really positive impression on all the players and coaches during their week at the Performance Centre, so it’s good to be able to offer him the opportunity to gain further coaching experience at a World Cup – and to share his considerable international experience with our next generation of batsmen” he said about Trott’s appointment as a batting coach.
James Taylor will retain his role:
Richard Dawson is currently serving as the coach of the U-19 side, who is currently away on tour to South Africa in a tri-series involving the African side Namibia. Steve Rhodes, who was part of the back-room staff was asked to go on a leave after he failed to report the arrest of cricketer Alex Hepburn.
The 27-year-old former English cricketer James Taylor would be retaining his role as assistant coach, alongside fast-bowling coach Neil Killeen and fielding coach Chris Taylor for the World Cup.
