Jos Buttler was the standout performer as England lost out to their compatriots India in the first T20 international of three. The win was a rather thumping one as the Indians secured a massive eight-wicket win, something that comes against perhaps the best limited-overs’ side in the cricketing fraternity at the moment. Buttler, as far as England was concerned at least, was the talk of the town with his 69.

However, in spite of this, there was some solace for England fans all over the world since the football team went on to reach the quarterfinal of the World Cup for the first time since 2006. It was a far from easy victory as far as Harry Kane’s men were concerned since Colombia had reached the quarterfinal of the World Cup in Brazil in 2014.

In spite of that, Gareth Southgate and his band of merry men did indeed make hay as they went on to win the match on penalties. Jordan Pickford, playing in his first ever World Cup was also the talk of the town with some fantastic performances between the sticks while keeping the ball out of the net. It was Eric Dier who converted the winning penalty to hand England the win. They will now face Sweden in the quarterfinal.

Jos Buttler took to social media handle Instagram to celebrate the victory. While there was a lot of talk about the distraction from the World Cup, the match in Moscow raged on to its zenith before eventually Eric Dier calmly converted the penalty that sent England through to the last eight. The second T20 international will be played in Cardiff on the 6th of July – Friday.
