JP Duminy to hang his boots from ODI cricket after the 2019 World Cup
The experienced campaigner made his ODI debut way back in 2008 against the Lankans.
JP Duminy, the South African all-rounder hasn’t had the smoothest of runs in international cricket. The Cape Town-born hasn’t been consistent enough and hence has been in and out of the national team. He wasn’t a part of the Proteas squad for the first three ODIs against Sri Lanka, but he eventually was selected for the last two games, one of which took place in Port Elizabeth.
In the meantime, it has been learned that the 34-year-old player would be bidding adieu to One Day International Cricket after the upcoming edition of the ICC World Cup, scheduled to get underway on Thursday, May 30, as per reports in Express Sports. The experienced campaigner made his ODI debut way back in 2008 against the Lankans and has played 193 games in the format.
A noteworthy career for JP Duminy
In those games, he scored 5047 runs at an average of 37.38 with 27 half-centuries and four centuries to his credit with a top score of 150 not out against the Netherlands in 2013 at Amstelveen. Duminy has been no mug with the ball either. He bowls slow off-breaks and has 68 wickets to his name. His best bowling figures of 4/16 came against Ireland at Benoni in February 2017.
Yesterday, he played his first game in the 50-overs format at the Port Elizabeth after a gap of five months. He didn’t disappoint and got one wicket apart from scoring 31 not out when South Africa were chasing a modest target of 190 to take a 4-0 lead in the five-match series. The veteran wasn’t a part of the national squad for their series against Australia and Pakistan.
Duminy has been a part of a couple of World Cups in 2011 and 2015 respectively, and the forthcoming version would be his third. He had a few decent outings in the domestic One Day Cup, representing the Cape Cobras and hence was drafted into the South African team. He would want to bow out on a high with some sterling performances in the mega tournament.
