K Gowtham reckons off-spinners can be successful in IPL 2018

The modern day cricket is evolving at a rapid rate. At a time when the notion clearly suggests the domination of wrist spinners in the shortest format of the game, Karnataka’s spinner K Gowtham feels the off-spinners can be successful too. Gowtham will be seen plying his trade for the Rajasthan Royals in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League.

He was one of the costliest buys at the IPL auctions and fetched a whopping amount of INR 6.2 crore. Commenting on the same, as per the quotes in India Today, K Gowtham remarked that the RR camp must have thought a lot before going for such high bids for him. He is looking forward to a good season with the Royals.

“Rajasthan Royals must have put in lot of thought in it (taking him) and I would definitely want to stand up to the expectation. Its always good to be bowling when it comes out well. I have been doing it for my state side and want to continue the same for Rajasthan Royals,” quoted K Gowtham.

‘Not only Chahal and Kuldeep’

Commenting on the notion of wrist spinners dictating terms, K Gowtham cited that the IPL has not only been about Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav. He pointed out that the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin and Harbhajan Singh, both being class off-spinners, have found great success in the tournament.

“Not only Chahal and Kuldeep, if you see IPL history, there is Ashwin who used to open the bowling and he has been very successful, one of the most successful bowler in fact. Harbhajan Singhs economy has been under six in IPL. So there is lot of success for off-spinners as well,” Gowtham remarked.

“You need to have lot of variations in your bowling. It will add on to your success. Yes wrist spinners are fancied in T20 but I am sure there is lot of scope for off-spinners as well,” he added further.

On his stint with the Mumbai Indians

It is worth noting that this is not the first time that the offie from Karnataka will be a part of the IPL roster. Last season, he was with the Mumbai Indians camp. However, he did not get a game to play during the season. Commenting on the same, he noted that he picked up the brains of Harbhajan Singh and coach Mahela Jayawardene during his stint with the defending champions.

“At Mumbai I had interaction with Harbhajan and picked up lot of strategic points from Mahela, also some batting tips from Sachin sir. Shane Warne is a legend and you would want to pick his brains. I am very excited and looking forward to work with him,” mentioned the Karnataka cricketer.
