Kagiso Rabada, Ngidi and Duminy benefit in the latest ICC ODI rankings after Sri Lanka series

South Africa won the five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in their own den by 3-2. They lost the last two matches after sealing the series in first three games itself which hurt them in the ODI team rankings. They are now ranked fourth with 110 points to their name and have slipped past New Zealand. However, the series victory has benefitted the players as their bowlers and all-rounders have risen in the latest ICC rankings.

Lungi Ngidi was the highest wicket-taker of the series for Proteas with 10 scalps in four matches and he deservedly jumped 57 places to grab the 88th place. His new-ball partner continued to be in the top 10 and climbed a spot and is at the 8th position now after picking 6 wickets in the series. The likes of Tabraiz Shamsi and Andile Phehlukwayo were also impressive during the series and they were also rewarded for their efforts.

JP Duminy shines with the bat

JP Duminy’s form with the bat was the biggest positive for the team from the rainbow nation in this 5-match rubber. He amassed 227 runs in 5 matches at an exceptional average of 56.75 and most importantly was assured while facing the spinners. He rose 11 spots to reach the 40th place in the latest ICC rankings for batsmen and was also named the Man of the Series.

The stand-in captain Quinton de Kock retained his seventh position while the injured Faf du Plessis who had to leave the series midway due to the shoulder injury slipped out of the top 10 batsmen. Hashim Amla’s poor form continued in the ODIs as well and he also dropped to the 14th place.

South Africa aimed at trying a few new players in the latter part of the series keeping in mind the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. They won’t be concerned much about the rankings as long as they are building a correct team for the next year’s mega-event in England.
