Kagiso Rabada had his task cut out when the Delhi Capitals team-management handed him the ball for the Super Over against Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday. The Delhi Capitals had managed to score just 10 runs in the Prasidh Krishna-over after the game ended in the tie. With the in-form Andre Russell to face the super over along with Dinesh Karthik, Rabada knew that he had a herculean task at his hand.
But when the over ended, it was Rabada who was mobbed by his ecstatic teammates while the Knight Riders dugout was left in disbelief. Rabada bowled six stunning yorkers to pull off a miraculous win for his team, helping the Delhi-based outfit register its second win of the season in three games. Rabada was under pressure straightaway after Russell hit his first ball for a four. However, he bowled a dot delivery to make a fine comeback before castling the dangerous Russell.
With 7 runs needed off the last three balls, Dinesh Karthik and Robin Uthappa could do nothing but take three singles on as many vicious and almost unplayable yorkers. Rabada helped Delhi defend the lowest total in a Super Over in IPL history as Delhi Capitals won the match by 3 runs after both teams ended up scoring 185 in their stipulated 20 overs each.
Speaking after the game, Delhi Capitals captain Shreyas Iyer revealed that Rabada was very clear with what he wanted to bowl in the Super Over. “Kagiso and I had a chat before the super over and he told me that he would go for yorkers all through, first, second, third, every ball. It takes some special skill to execute that,” Iyer said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
Iyer also admitted that his side did not expect their match to go to the Super Over after needing to score just 6 runs in the final over. “Definitely a long day at the office. We didn’t expect it to go that deep, expected us to finish it with an over to spare. Credit must go to Kuldeep Yadav for that over (last over),” Iyer said.
Cannot control Russell:
The Delhi captain further conceded that it is tough to contain Russell when he gets going. Russell had walked in to bat when Knight Riders were reeling at 61 for 5. However, the Jamaican hit the Delhi bowlers all around the park, smashing 62 off just 28 to power the visitors to 185 for 8.
“You can’t control Andre Russell when he gets going. Even his mistimes go for sixes and even the bowlers find it tough to plan against him when things just don’t go to plan,” Iyer conceded.
