Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise has named their captain for the upcoming IPL 2020 season, as they decided to replace Kane Williamson with David Warner. Williamson had led the franchise to the finals of the league in 2018 when Warner was banned due to his role in the ball-tampering scandal and continued to lead when Warner came back in 2019.

However, Warner is the captain which had led the SRH to the title in 2016 edition, while ending up as the second-highest run-getter in the season as well, behind Virat Kohli. He was named captain of the team in 2014 and led with gusto till 2017. Warner scored 692 runs in 12 matches in IPL 2019 with one century and eight half-centuries to his name with a strike rate of 143.86.

Meanwhile, Kane Williamson struggled with a shoulder niggle in the 2019 season and managed to play just 9 games, scoring 156 runs. However, he had a bumper IPL 2018, scoring 735 runs in 17 matches with eight half-centuries. It seems the team management feels that with Warner back in stride and England’s Jonny Bairstow opening with him, it will be hard to find a place for Williamson in the playing XI given that only four foreign players are allowed.

David Warner is expected to play the full season

David Warner is expected to play the full season and the decision to make him captain once again makes sense; especially given the red-hot form he is in with the bat. He recently scored 67* and 57 in the two T20Is against South Africa, a series that Australia won 2-1 with ease. However, the decision to make him captain has not gone down well with the SRH fan base.

It seems that the fans of the franchise feel that Kane Williamson had done a good job in Warner’s absence and should have continued as the skipper of the SRH team, even if Warner came back. The way the Australian southpaw batted when he wasn’t the captain in IPL 2019 was amazing as he ripped apart all bowling attacks with ease and formed a deadly opening partnership with Bairstow, who was retained by the franchise.
