The first Test between New Zealand and England at the Eden Park in Auckland is currently underway. The match entered the record books as it’s the first Day/Night Test hosted by New Zealand ever since the inception of the format in 2015. The game started off in a stupendous manner for the hosts decimated the hosts right from the outset.
While the bowling has been outstanding from the new-ball bowlers, the fielders also supported them throughout. Trent Boult and Tim Southee dished out thunderbolts to leave Joe Root’s men in tatters. Meanwhile, England was also draped with the danger of slumping to their lowest ever Test score of 45 against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground way back in 1877.
Apart from Boult and Southee’s brilliance with the red cherry, the slip catching has also been stupendous, to say the least. They pounced on every opportunity and never allowed England with a foothold in the game. Kane Williamson has been safe as houses as a fielder and he patrolled the position between gully and fourth slip.
The screamer by Williamson
He has taken some stunning catches over the course of his career and he didn’t disappoint on the field this time around. The Tauranga-born cricketer pulled off a screamer in the slips to dismiss Stuart Broad. England was tottering with the score reading 27/8 in the 16th over when Broad was nipped out. Tim Southee produced a beautiful delivery that shaped away from the left-handed batsman.
Broad poked at it, more in hope than with conviction. However, the ball took a thick outside edge of his willow and was destined to flow past the slip. Nevertheless, Williamson dived full length onto his left, his wrong side, and plucked the ball out of thin air. While Broad was stunned with the effort, the Kiwis were ecstatic.
