Kapil Dev and VVS Laxman mighty impressed with the U19 team
The duo couldn't praise U19 team coach Rahul Dravid enough for the team's win.
India’s stupendous show in the recently concluded World Cup has opened the doors for a few to play senior cricket soon enough. The likes of Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi were seen bowling at lightning speeds which made everyone sit up and take notice. Legendary Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev is certainly impressed with the India Under-19 team which lifted the World Cup in New Zealand on Saturday and spoke at length about the fantastic win.
Kapil Dev mentioned that Indian captain Virat Kohli is an inspiration for the young U19 players. He further quipped that Kohli has set an exceptional fitness standard which is being emulated by the Young Turks. He also heaped praise on the BCCI, the officials and all those who contributed towards the massive success.
“It is truly fabulous. Frankly, I haven’t seen much of the U-19 cricket back home in India. But, the way these boys performed in the World Cup is something really special,’’ the 1983 World Cup Winning captain was quoted as saying by Sportstarlive.
“Credit should go to the coach, Rahul Dravid, and also to the bowling coach Paras Mhambrey. Honestly, it is a great feeling to see the young fast bowlers cross the 140-kmph mark consistently throughout the World Cup. And, even more wonderful experience to see them field brilliantly too,’’ Dev further added.
A word of caution from Laxman
Very very special VVS Laxman also glorified the performance but had a word of caution for the colts. He said that the team played like a champion side throughout the World Cup and the credit in his view goes to Rahul Dravid as there has been a lot of planning put behind this for months.
He lauded the efforts of the bowlers and had encouraging words for the captain Prithvi Shaw. Laxman, like many, feels that the victory ‘should augur well for Indian cricket‘.
He very rightly served a note of caution and said that in the past there have been players who disappeared from the scene after performing well at the U19 level. Laxman hoped that the BCCI will keep monitoring these players as they have the talent and the attitude to represent the national team at the highest level.
