Former Indian cricketer Kapil Dev has always backed the veteran Indian cricketer MS Dhoni. Dhoni is arguably the most popular cricketer in the country who is constantly under the scrutiny. Many believe that he should hang his boots and make way for someone else. Amidst this backdrop, Kapil Dev has asked the big question.
As per the reports in FirstPost, he rightly questioned if the Indian resources are equipped enough to replace someone of the calibre of MS Dhoni. He also pointed out that the problem is with people trying to expect Dhoni yielding the same results he gave a decade ago.
“Why do people have this doubt? Is there any cricketer who can take Mahi’s place in the next series? I’m not talking about the 2019 World Cup. I’ll go series by series. He’s such a mature cricketer if he can help Virat Kohli, why not? If he’s not performing at all, I can understand,” Kapil Dev quoted.
“The problem with the media is that they compare Dhoni with what he was 10 years back. He’s not going to be like that, but I think we need to see whatever he’s doing for the team is it good enough for the team or not,” he added further.
On India’s successful tour of South Africa
Commenting on the recent success of the Indian team in South Africa, Kapil Dev remarked that the efforts need to be commended. He admitted that he never really expected the Indian side to bounce back in such a fine fashion after a Test series defeat. But the way the Virat Kohli-led side showed character on the field was absolutely world class.
“India’s tour went wonderfully well. I never expected that the team would bounce back so well (after the first two Tests). India should have won the Test series also, but South Africa played really well. India got some opportunities in the Tests, but they could not exploit that. But finally, once the won the last Test, India didn’t look back,” the former cricketer conceded.
Also, the former Indian captain rightly cited that winning a series with a margin as good as 5-1 on the South African soil is a big achievement. The way Virat Kohli played and the way the wrist spinners rose to the occasion, it all went in India’s way.
“Winning 5-1 in South Africa against South Africa was huge. Besides Virat Kohli, our wrist spinners also did an incredible job. In the last few years, ever since he’s taken over he’s done amazingly well in the way he’s motivated the entire team,” Dev added.
