For the last couple of years, we have seen Bollywood switch to the biopic mode; with biopics of famous sports personalities and cricketers released and set to be released. Now going with the trend, former Indian skipper Kapil Dev, who is also known as the Haryana Hurricane has proposed the idea of making a film on the victorious Indian Cricket Team in the 1983 World Cup.
Vishnu Induri, the founder of the Celebrity Cricket League along with Phantom Films is all set to produce the film on Team India’s incredible win over the favorites and the contenders West Indies. The film is set to release in March 2017. Kapil Dev feels that their World Cup triumph is a “story of inspiration” which needs to be told.
As per the reports from NDTV Sports, the producers have signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the 1983 World Cup winning team for an official biopic. “The Journey of the 1983 team is a story of inspiration which proves that one can achieve anything if they aim for it and work for it no matter what the world thinks,” Kapil Dev said.
“We are super excited about the making of the 1983 movie and it’s a huge responsibility on our shoulders to get it right as we don’t get to tell stories like this often,” read the statement issued jointly by Induri and Phantom Films’ Madhu Mantena.

West Indies was undoubtedly the better team in the 1980s, after winning back-to-back World Cups in 1975 and 1979. And India blocked their run to a hat-trick of World Cups. India was put into bat first and was restricted to 183 runs. But Kapil Dev along with Madan Lal and Mohinder Amarnath bowled out the opposition for 140 runs to win the maiden World Cup.
Mohinder Amarnath was awarded the “Man of the Match” for picking up three wickets, and for adding a handy 26 runs to the total. It was not just a win for India, rather, it is something that made cricket a religion in the nation.
