Karun Nair’s topsy-turvy journey on the field
Nair burst on to the scene back in November 2016, making his Test debut versus England. In the third game of the series, he turned up with an unbeaten knock of 303 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. He became the second Indian after Virender Sehwag to get a triple ton. However, the right-handed batsman lost his spot in the team after only six matches.
He made his comeback for the one-off Test versus Afghanistan back in June 2018, but couldn’t break into the eleven. Thereafter, he was a part of the squad for the away Test series against the Three Lions. Even as the likes of Rishabh Pant and Hanuma Vihari made their debuts, Nair had to continue warming the benches, which would’ve added to his despair and agony.
Thereafter, he was left out of the two-match series versus the Windies at home, a move that came as a surprise to many. His last competitive match came back in the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he played for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), led by Ravi Ashwin.
