Karun Nair has smashed his maiden century in T20 cricket for Karnataka in the ongoing zonal league of the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy. He scored 111 runs off just 52 deliveries while opening the innings in the game against Tamil Nadu and helped his team post a formidable total on the board. His knock was studded with eight fours and as many gigantic maximums. However, he would love to see his team crossing the line which will also help them to qualify for the next round of the tournament.
After being inserted to bat first, Nair stood out as every other batsman alongside him was getting out not contributing much to the team’s cause. It was him who batted gamely and kept his team in the hunt being dismissed only in the 18th over. He farmed most of the strike as the others were struggling to get bat on the ball and propelled his side to a decent score of 179 after 20 overs.
His knock gains a huge importance with the fact that the second highest run-getter in the line-up was Ravikumar Samarth who only scored 19 off 20 deliveries.
Tamil Nadu, in response, is struggling to come to terms with the pitch and have been reduced to 27/2 after five overs. Washington Sundar and the skipper Vijay Shankar are in the middle currently trying hard for the team to help them take over the line.
Records created by Nair
Karun Nair, on his way to the sensational ton, created a few records of his own and would be proud of his achievement. He equalled Mayank Agarwal in terms of the highest score for Karnataka in the shortest format of the game ever. Also, he smashed the fourth fastest century in the history of the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament as he reached the milestone in just 48 deliveries.
The record holder for the fastest century is Manprit Juneja who had scored a ton off 43 balls in 2013. The other two players above Nair are Rohit Sharma (45 balls) and Deepak Hooda (46 balls).
