Kashmir celebrates India's defeat against Pakistan with drums and firecrackers
For the Kashmiris, it was an early Eid.
On Sunday, the Kennington Oval in London witnessed history. Pakistan claimed their first ever ICC Champions Trophy title, that too by defeating arch-rivals India. Before the match, Pakistan were placed 8th in the ODI team rankings. It was a shock for the Indian fans. While some could not control the tears rolling down their eyes, others expressed their rage on social media.
Few even destroyed their TV sets. From Virat Kohli‘s captaincy to reckless batting, everything was criticised by the Indian cricket loyalists. While the rest of India was mourning over the shameful 180-run thrashing, the northernmost state of the nation was celebrating Pakistan’s victory. As soon as Pakistani skipper Sarfraz Ahmed took the catch to dismiss Jasprit Bumrah, Kashmiri people were on the streets.
Kashmiris out in the streets!
Beatings of drums were heard in the valley. Large processions were held in the city of Srinagar and many other places. For the local people, it was Eid celebrations that came a bit too early. Celebrations were also held in the Uri town of Baramulla district in northern Kashmir. The Uri town is very close to the Line of Control (LoC) and is surrounded by the Indian Army.
Slogans in favour of the winning team were also raised. The fans then marched towards the residence of moderate Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. They wanted him to come out of his house and celebrate with them. To fulfil their wish, Farooq came out of his residence in Nigeen. He then addressed the youth of the procession. Also, he congratulated the Pakistani cricket team on handing the Men in Blue a thumping defeat.
Once again, the drums went loud and the firecrackers went crazy. Mirwaiz was also indulged with the fans this time. The joy of the fans knew no bounds as the celebrations continued.
