After India’s legendary wicket-keeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni invented it, the helicopter shot is being considered as one of the most exciting and attractive shots modern-day cricket has witnessed, especially in the limited overs. However, not many have been able to successfully master it after its founder executed it with ease. On Sunday, Windies tail-ender Keemo Paul tried a hand at it but the result was nothing spectacular.
Keemo Paul’s helicopter shot failed to take off
It was in the fourth ball of the final over of the Windies innings when Paul attempted the shot but it fetched him only one run as the ball went along the ground to wide long on. Paul, nevertheless, ended up as the Windies second-highest scorer with an unbeaten 15 off 13 balls as the visitors finished at a less-than-a-ball score of 109 for 8 in 20 overs. India had some early hiccups but managed to go past the line in the 18th over with 5 wickets in hand.
Paul went for some runs while bowling as India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series. Dhoni has played the helicopter shot with such an expertise that he often has plundered runs at will through its perfect execution. He has churned out some big innings in which the shot has been played abundantly. Gradually, it became a signature style of MSD, one of the best scorers limited-overs cricket has seen.
The man who made the shot popular, however, was not present at the Eden Gardens on Sunday as he has been dropped from India’s T20I team. The 37-year-old has been in poor batting form now and the selectors have decided to look ahead to the 2020 World T20 in Australia, a tournament where Dhoni is very unlikely to feature. Dhoni has also been ignored for the three-match T20I series in Australia scheduled later this month and will be seen donning India colours only next year when India will take on the Aussies Down Under.
