When the Indian Premier League was launched in 2008, no English player took part in the mega event. Next season, England’s then superstar batsman Kevin Pietersen became the joint most expensive player at the auction. He was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for a whopping 7.5 crore INR and was made the captain of the side.
Though Pietersen left the tournament early due to his international assignments, he did leave a lasting impression on the tournament. He returned to play for RCB the next season before moving to Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals).
During his time in the league, the South African born English batsman spent time with many Indian players such as Virender Sehwag and Virat Kohli. In a recent interview, Pietersen talked about his experiences in India and with the Indian players.
The former England skipper revealed that he has had his most fun experiences on the cricket field with Virender Sehwag. He talked about how he loves to watch him because of his carefree spirit. Kevin Pietersen said he absolutely loved it when Sehwag used to sing songs when the bowlers would start his run-up and then smash the ball over the park with ease. KP went on to call the former Indian opener a superstar of the game.
Knew Virat Kohli was destined for greatness, says Kevin Pietersen
The 39-year old then talked about his friendship with the current Indian captain Virat Kohli. The two players were part of the RCB set up together in 2009 and 2010. Kevin Pietersen said he would pull Kohli’s leg during his early days by calling him chubby. He stated that the two of them share a brilliant bond even though there is an age gap between them.
He further said that he always felt that Kohli was destined for greatness. He says that he spotted a sheer determination in Virat to be the best possible player he could be. He recalls that it was evident from Kohli’s approach, his learning process and his determination to win matches for his side.
Kevin Pietersen was of all praise of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He said that the atmosphere in an IPL match, with the crowd and several stars of the game, was unmatchable.
