The final league match of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) was lit up by the blitzkrieg of Evin Lewis as he blazed his way to 97 off just 32 deliveries. Patriots chased the total of 129 in just 7 overs with a humongous run rate of 18.43. However, Kieron Pollard, the skipper of Tridents, bowled the no-ball deliberately to deny Lewis, what could have been the 2nd fastest T20 hundred ever.

St. Kitts Nevis and Patriots clashed Barbados Tridents in the final match of the league stages Barbados Tridents had to win big to make it through to the playoffs while Patriots had to win to confirm their place in the top two. Lewis and Chris Gayle made sure the opposition is crashed out of the tournament by chasing the meager total of 129 in just 7 overs. Though, the game was marred as Kieron Pollard ended it with a display of poor sportsman spirit.

The incident

Chasing a paltry total set by Tridents, the Trinidadian wreaked havoc smashing all the bowlers out of the park from the word go. Gayle for a change enjoyed watching his partner kill it from the best place in the house and was happy to play second fiddle to his partner. Lewis got to the fastest fifty of the season from 19 balls and stormed his way into the 90s.

The incident happened in the 8th over of the chase when Patriots needed just one run to win and Lewis was three runs away from his century. Pollard, who decided to bowl the eighth over himself, overstepped the line deliberately by a huge margin and bowled a no-ball which denied the left-hander, a century.

The delivery was a high bouncer to ensure if he failed to overstep, umpires would have called it for height. Lewis straight away expressed his disappointment by nodding his head as he looked at Pollard with disgust.

While the Tridents skipper is known for his cheeky play on the field, this incident has invited scathing from the fans around the world. The action from the all-rounder is being termed ‘cheating’ as it was clearly against the spirit of the gentleman’s game.

Patriots won the game easily and now will face Trinbago Knight Riders in the first qualifier on Tuesday. Caribbean Premier League will come to its conclusion on Sunday, 10th September.
