The West Indies have had a rough outing in the last three months or so. The Caribbean team could only secure a couple of wins in the 2019 World Cup after starting the mega event with a thumping victory over Pakistan. Thereafter, they lost the ODI and T20I series against India. Now, it has been learned that Kieron Pollard is set to take charge of the national limited-overs teams.

He wasn’t a part of the mega event in England and Wales, but played the three T20Is against the Men in Blue last month. Lately, he was appointed as the skipper of the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in the 2019 edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). He has replaced Dwayne Bravo, who has been ruled out due to a finger injury. Pollard has started well with three consecutive wins.

CWI took the decision of appointing Pollard

As far as Pollard’s national appointment is concerned, it means that ODI skipper Jason Holder and T20I captain Carlos Brathwaite are set to face the axe. As per reports in Trinidad and Tobago Guardian, the decision was taken by the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Board of Directors on Saturday. Pollard got support from six directors after his name was proposed by the selection committee.

The 32-year-old has been a part of the West Indies team for over a decade now. Ever since April 2007, he has played 101 ODIs and 62 T20Is in which he has notched 2,289 and 903 runs respectively with three centuries and 12 half-centuries. He has been effective with his slow medium pacers as well, having picked up 73 wickets. Pollard never represented the team in Test cricket though.

Pollard has given a good account of himself in the CPL as the Knight Riders are placed second on the table with six points. TKR is also one of the two teams, who haven’t lost a game, along with table-toppers Guyana Amazon Warriors. Pollard and Co last beat the St Lucia Zouks by seven wickets in Trinidad.

Holder and Brathwaite are the skippers of the Barbados Tridents and the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots respectively. Brathwaite’s side has lost both their matches against the Knights and the Warriors, Holder’s team, on the other hand, got thrashed by the Warriors by 47 runs in their first match in Guyana.
