From selling paani-puri on streets to clinching Player of the Series in U19 World Cup 2020– it has been quite an eventful journey for 18-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal, who hogged the limelight by consistently delivering with his willow. Even though India U19’s World Cup campaign did not end on a winning note in the finals, the biggest positive that the Boys in Blue took home was unearthing of many future superstars including Yashasvi Jaiswal.

The right-handed opener stood out a notch above the rest by smashing 400 runs in his six innings of the U19 World Cup 2020. In those six World Cup innings, the 18-year-old had five 50+ scores–including a ton. After Jaiswal returned home after his heroics in South Africa, the person who was concerned the most about the youngster’s health was none other than his mother. Jaiswal’s parents arrived in Mumbai from Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh to meet their son post his gallant display in the U19 World Cup.

However, on the thing which was a matter of concern for Jaiswal’s mother was the teenager’s weight loss. “Kitna sukh gaya hai tu! (You have shrivelled!), don’t you eat properly?” — Jaiswal’s mother seemed worried about her son’s current state of body. However, according to the swashbuckling opener, it’s a difficult task for him to make his mother understand about the fitness levels which he has to adhere to. “How can I make her understand about fitness?!” responded Jaiswal with a grin.

Yashasvi Jaiswal showcased immense maturity in U19 World Cup 2020

One facet of Jaiswal which sets him apart from other youngsters is his ever-increasing maturity and a philosophical outlook towards life. Waking up at dawn every day to spend some time reflecting on himself has now become a daily routine for Jaiswal– who was suggested to do so by his coach. The 18-year-old’s batting approach in South Africa seemed like he is undoubtedly wise beyond his years.

“I know about myself. I don’t have anything to do with the world. I have kept my life simple. Clear. I wake up around 5 am. Sir told me to use the time to talk to myself, understand myself, motivate myself. That’s what I do. It’s important that in these times, you spend time on yourself. I don’t waste time thinking about how others should understand me; I have understood myself, that’s more important,” said Jaiswal as quoted by The New Indian Express.

Jaiswal also opened up about the social media rage and how his teammates have suggested him to join the social networking websites. However, the teenager is crystal clear about his ultimate goal in life– playing for India.

“It is easy to get distracted in this age. You will become what you think; your thoughts make you. (Jaisa sochoge waise banoge). Some of my team-mates do tell me that I should get on to social media; I don’t see why. Since childhood, I was clear in what I wanted to do. I left my home, left all my comfort so that I can reach where I want too. I haven’t reached nowhere near to my dream of playing for India,” he says.
