Facing the table-toppers Chennai Super Kings in a crucial match at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata Knight Riders never looked in any discomfort what so ever during the run chase. To make things even better 19-year old Shubman Gill produced a superb knock in front of the home crowd which helped them topple MS Dhoni‘s CSK from the top position. Sunrisers Hyderabad have taken the top position in the points table.
Earlier, the Super Kings posted a competitive total on the back of yet another marvellous knock from Dhoni who hit 4 sixes in his 25-ball 45 runs inning. Prior to that, the CSK top order played their part and set team up for a big total with a run rate that was constantly flirting with 10. Shane Watson along with Faf du Plessis provided a quickfire start while in the middle, Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu played their bits to keep the innings on course.
Piyush Chawla who bowled the second over of the innings came back to deliver the last over had a good game overall and after his team’s win, the seasoned spinner was full of praises for Gill whose unbeaten half-century steered KKR’s run chase.
Gill was ready to take any role
The 19-year-old was batting lower down the order at the start of the tournament. However, an injury to Nitish Rana presented Gill the opportunity to bat higher up in the order. KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik trusted the youngster and promoted him up the order.
“During the camp, before the tournament, I said in a press conference that he (Shubman) is a special talent and well, today he proved that he actually is one!” he said while talking to KKR.in.
Chawla suggested that the injury to Rana was a blow for the side and they needed someone who can craft an innings like the middle order batsman.
“Nitish (Rana) was injured and he is someone who was doing really well for us. We needed someone who could craft the innings and he (Shubman) did what the team demanded. If you see the team combination, it’s a team game, so the team comes first. So it doesn’t matter who is batting at seven (like Shubman was in the previous occasions) and who is batting at ten. What matters is the way you win the game,” the leggie added.
